ETF Deathwatch for April 2021

The ETF Deathwatch shrank in April. Sixteen exchange-traded products (“ETPs”) were added to the list, and 20 were removed.

All of the removals were due to increased health. This is no surprise given the strong performance of the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in April.

All of the additions were due to low average daily volume for the past three months, which could be due to the nature of each ETP’s investment product. These ETPs may have enough assets under management (“AUM”) to keep them from closure. However, our system takes into account both AUM and volume. If both remain low, these funds may be considered for closure.

Thirty-nine ETPs on Deathwatch have been in the market for more than 10 years, including many short ETPs.

The average asset level of the threatened ETPs on ETF Deathwatch increased from $9.4 million to $9.84 million, and 21 products had less than $2 million in assets. The average age of products on the list decreased from 56.27 to 55.32, and the number of products at least 5 years of age decreased from 104 to 103. The largest ETP on the list had an AUM of $24.87 million, while the smallest had assets of $686,256.
